Covid-19 Updates: Higher than expected volume – Delivery delays

Please be aware that we continue to experience considerably higher than normal parcel volumes throughout the country.   Last week we experienced our busiest week of the year so far and as at Thursday 25th November, we are on track to eclipse that record.

While Auckland will be moving out of Alert level 3, Black Friday and Christmas volumes will more than likely set a new benchmark next week.  This will continue to put pressure on the system which will result in continued delays into and out of Auckland in particular.

To ensure the wellbeing and safety of our team and the wider community, we will continue to operate with protocols such as segregated shifts and social distancing as advised by the Ministry of Health.  Our people are operating in extremely challenging conditions and we are incredibly proud of their performance and grateful for their hard work and commitment since COVID re-appeared in the community again in mid-August.

In addition to activating our peak plan early, we have significantly increased personnel for freight sorting and delivery. Auckland has acquired an additional processing facility, a 2200m2 canopy is currently under construction to stage freight and we have just signed up to new and significantly larger premises in West Auckland.

While all this helps, the unrelenting volume means we are currently experiencing delays of approximately 2-5 business days.

To add to an already challenging environment, the Rail and Maritime Transport Union has indicated they will be taking industrial action in December in the form of a strike. This is likely to be two days and will affect all rail and ferry services in New Zealand. During that period we will not be able to accept any two-day Inter Island freight as it will not be able to move across the Cook Strait. We do not have the capacity to store this volume, nor afford to lose the transport containers from our network that this freight will sit in for the 4-5 day period.  The strike is expected to take place 15-16 December, however as more information comes to hand, we continue to provide updates.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could please refrain from contacting our branches if your delivery has been delayed for less than 5 working days.

COVID-19 Updates -Auckland Alert Level 3

September 21st

With the move to Alert level 3 for Auckland, we will commence delivery for business addresses that are currently being held in our depots.

Should your business NOT be in a position to accept deliveries under Alert Level 3, it would be appreciated if you could let us know by contacting your Account Manager or local branch.

Due to the volume of freight to be redelivered, we do expect there will be some delays and request your patience during this time.

The safety of our customers, staff, contractors and the wider community is paramount at this critical time of our COVID elimination journey, therefore all deliveries will remain contactless.

COVID-19 Update – Auckland Border Control

From 11:59pm Thursday 16th September 2021, NZ Police will implement the following border controls and are expected to spot check 10% of vehicles transiting in and out of Auckland.


Vehicles will be required to produce:

• Formal identification
• Official MBIE Business Travel document
• Proof of a COVID test within 7 days

We have partnered with a provider of saliva testing for our drivers which will be undertaken in Penrose Auckland, so evidence of testing can be provided at the border control to ensure that should any of our vehicles be stopped, we are fully compliant with the requirements as well as ensuring the safety of our team and extended community.

These spot checks however may have an impact on our line-haul network and driver hours regulations, so we expect that this also has the potential to affect service standards for all destinations outside of Auckland.

We sincerely apologise for any disruption this may cause, these issues are completely outside of our control but we will do everything we can to mitigate delays.

COVID-19 Alert Level 4 and Level 2 Updates

September 7th

With areas outside of Auckland entering Alert Level 2 – parcel volumes are likely to increase substantially.  This in combination with COVID-19 safety protocols and border controls may mean slight delays.

Contactless pick-ups and deliveries in place New Zealand-wide. Please ensure our couriers can operate on your premises with at least 2m distancing.

Please do not send items to Auckland addresses that are closed. We do not have extensive storage facilities for undeliverable freight. If an alternative address is not supplied and we have to return shipments, there will be a charge.

NOW Couriers branches in Auckland will not be open to the public until Auckland is at Alert Level 2.
